Printhead Specifications

Epson i3200-A1HD vs i3200-U1HD: High-Density Printheads for Different Ink Systems

Compare Epson i3200(8)-A1HD (aqueous) and i3200-U1HD (UV/weak solvent) printheads. Official specs on 1200dpi resolution, 8-row nozzles, drop size, viscosity & compatibility. Choose the right HD model

The Epson i3200 series continues to set the standard in industrial inkjet printing. While the standard i3200-A1/E1/U1 models deliver excellent performance, the i3200(8)-A1HD and i3200-U1HD variants are engineered for high-density, high-resolution applications.

Both printheads support 1,200 dpi printing and feature 8 nozzle rows, enabling superior image quality and flexible color configurations. However, despite their nearly identical physical design, they are optimized for completely different ink types.

Using the wrong printhead can lead to clogging, misfiring, or long-term damage.

This guide compares the i3200(8)-A1HD and i3200-U1HD based on official specifications — so you can choose the right one for your system.

i3200(8)-A1HD: High-Density Aqueous Printing

The i3200(8)-A1HD is designed for aqueous (water-based) inks, making it ideal for applications that demand smooth gradients and photo-realistic output.

  • Ink Compatibility: Aqueous ink
  • Viscosity Range: 3–4 mPa·s
  • Resolution: Up to 1,200 dpi with 4 nozzle rows (for 2-color printing)
  • Color Flexibility: Supports up to 8 colors at 300 dpi

Drop Performance:

  • Binary: 6 pl (43.2 kHz)
  • 3-level gray: 6.3 pl, 12.3 pl (21.6 kHz)
  • 4-level gray: 3.8 pl, 6.1 pl, 9.4 pl (21.6 kHz)

Applications: DTF printing, textile, indoor signage, photo printing

A key advantage: the i3200(8)-A1HD is compatible with the same driver boards, ink systems, and waveforms as the standard i3200-A1, simplifying integration for existing users.

i3200-U1HD: High-Density UV & Weak Solvent Printing

The i3200-U1HD is built for UV-curable and weak solvent inks, commonly used in flatbed and hybrid printers for rigid substrates.
  • Ink Compatibility: UV ink / weak solvent ink
  • Viscosity Range: 5–7 mPa·s — significantly higher than aqueous
  • Resolution: 1,200 dpi with 4 rows (optimized for high-precision output)
  • Color Flexibility: Up to 8 colors at 300 dpi
Drop Performance:
  • Binary: 6.0 pl (43.2 kHz)
  • 3-level gray: 5.6 pl, 12.0 pl (21.6 kHz)
  • 4-level gray: 3.9 pl, 5.6 pl, 12.0 pl (12.0 kHz)
Applications: UV flatbed printing, rigid signage, industrial marking
The higher viscosity requirement means the internal fluid path and piezo response are tuned for thicker fluids. Do not use with aqueous inks — risk of poor meniscus control or flooding.

Shared Platform: PrecisionCore & 1,200 dpi Advantage

Despite their different ink optimizations, both models share core technologies that define the i3200-HD series:
FeatureValue
TechnologyPrecisionCore MicroTFP
ManufacturingALL MEMS (Micro-Electro-Mechanical Systems)
ActuatorThin-film piezoelectric elements
Nozzle Layout8 rows, 3,200 nozzles
Max Resolution1,200 dpi (4 rows, 2 colors)
Print Width33.8 mm
Dimensions69.1 × 59.5 × 36.7 mm
Weight82 g
Design GoalHigh-resolution, low-cost-per-print industrial printing

This shared platform enables multi-head array integration at lower system cost, ideal for wide-format and high-speed industrial printers.

⚠️ Why Ink Type Compatibility Is Critical

The i3200-A1HD and i3200-U1HD are not interchangeable — even though they look nearly identical.

Viscosity mismatch:
A1HD (3–4 mPa·s) vs U1HD (5–7 mPa·s) — using UV ink on A1HD can cause under-ejection or clogging.
Chemical compatibility:
UV and weak solvent inks are chemically aggressive. The U1HD uses corrosion-resistant materials not present in the A1HD.
Waveform tuning:
Although A1HD supports i3200-A1 waveforms, U1HD may require different driving signals for optimal drop formation.
📌 Never assume cross-compatibility — always match the printhead to your ink system.

How to Identify Genuine i3200(8)-A1HD vs i3200-U1HD

To avoid counterfeit or mislabeled units, check the product label on the printhead body:
i3200(8)-A1HD: Look for “Aqueous ink” and the model marking “I3200(8)-A1HD”
i3200-U1HD: Marked “UV or weak solvent ink” and “I3200-U1HD”
Both should include the Epson genuine label
When sourcing replacements, always request clear photos of the label and verify with the supplier.
